A REPORT FOR THE PROTEST DEMONSTRATION OF MONDAY 14TH OF MAY 2012 AT CHOUCHA CAMP OF UNHCR TUNISIEN,
THE CONCERN AND DIFFICULTIES OF THE REJECTED CASES AND PEOPLE LIVING IN THE CAMP AS RECOGNISED REFUGEES WITHOUT RESSETLEMENTS.
A peaceful protest demonstration held by the communities living in choucha camp for long without a solution.
Nationalities affected by the UNHCR final rejections that cannot return to their countries of origin, due to commitments and personal differences that we earlier explain in our interviews,no possibilities of returning to Libya, due to polical instability and regional conflicts and also we cannot remain in the desert without a solution to our plights.
The second category are persons recognised as refugees by the UNHCR protection team, but not in the ressetlements progrmme and the Somalians that were return from the boat recently.
The nationalities involved in the demonstration are as follows:Somalians,Sudanese/darfur,Eriterean,Ethiopians,Nigerians,Ivorians,Ghanians,Sierre leone,Liberians,Gambians,Chadians and other affected nationals.
The protest which commenced at 10am in the morning lasted till 3pm with a delegation from the Tunisien social and economic forum that made some documented and video interviews from each of the communities represented in the struggle.
The forum delegations left at 12:38 after an interogation from the offices of the UNHCR and the military colonel without an explanation to us.
The military colonel who later came to negotiate with the populace further made an appeal that we should return to our tents and that the Tunisien government has heard our voices and messages and are trying to do something to that effect. We reached an agreement that, after 2 weeks if we dont get any response we are going to embark on another protest demonstration and a hunger strike,he answered by saying we have to inform him before hand, just like we did in this demonstration. We insisted the UNHCR protection team who are the responsible that evacuated us from Libya have to address our pains and stress we are passing through under the biggest umbrella that covers the world.Afterwhat the UNHCR protection team requested for delegations from each of the nationalities, segregating the rejected cases from people already recognised, but not in the ressetlement plans.
The first meeting was with the rejected cases(a closed door dialogue) that lasted for more than an hour, where the represntatives lamented their pains, difficulties and limitations we have been confronted with most especcially with the final rejections. Some members of these communities has been affected psycologically and almost growing insane, because they lost hope and their minds.Another fact is that we were among the affected in the Libyan revolution, but living here in the desert without a solution for a long period of time and EVEN with the final rejections we have no where to turn to,in the interviews we already explain our different points of fear why we cannot return to our place of birth and among this group we have some vulnerables, pregnant women, newly delivered babies crying out for help in this HALL of PAINS.After all the complaint the UNHCR representative started by saying that rejected cases are out of their mandate and now under the Tunisien government, but there was an argument because Tunisien only hosted the victims fleeing Libya and did not partake in the evacuation, besides some nationalities that their files were complicated cannot be in position for paying for the act.She further said rather than making a protest demonstration we should aline our complaint directly to the offices of the UNHCR,and this has been one of the impossibility we have been faced with ever since the advent of the final rejection letters. The limitations we have been through in the camp, like medical and others, she said she is going to look into that. Finally the communities remain on the point that we need a solution to our sufferings. After all the dialogues, she requested for representatives from the rejected communities, that after two weeks they will call them for a meeting. The first phase come to an end with the 2weeks agreement.
The second session which was for the mainly the Somalians that return from the sea and Somalians with the certificate,no resstlements. The UNHCR representative spoke with the community leader on phone, because he was not in the camp as at then, asking him why did his community decided to join in the protest?but the responce was pushed back to the protestants, who has requested for a solution to their problems..
ENCLOSED REPORT OF OUR PROTEST DEMONSTRATION.
